It consistently asks for integers between 1 and 223. I've gone into my Network properties and attempted to manually assign the DNS entries but it won't allow me to leave them blank. If that doesn't work, try to swap again to NAT and reboot your virtual machine. I use a trick to intentionally "break" attempts out to the Internet from Windows XP workstations, while still allowing file sharing connectivity, and access to local file servers from the workstation, if that's what you're getting at.
